Conducted on April 7th - 2 pm 2009 in the Harbor Conference Room.

The meeting was well attended by senor PIs, MBARi staff, postdocs, and MBARi students.

Here are few notes from the meeting, please add if you have better memory:

• Number of publication still matters for young scientists.
• For more mature scientists number of publications becomes less important and H-index becomes a better indicator of scientific performance.
• Young scientists should strive to publish independent papers as soon as it becomes ethically possible. It is ethical to do so, once your adviser think it is ethical.
• Synthesis figures make memorable papers.
• Publishing in high citation rate journal is good
• Publishing in vanity journals is bad. Vanity journals have 100% acceptance rate
• Publishing a variety of publications is good: short papers (GRL), full length papers, non-academic papers.
• Publishing synthesis papers is a great way to achieve high citation counts. 
• Practical considerations in submitting the paper: color figures, maximum page length, audience of the journal, page charges.
• Publishing book chapters is a bad idea, sicne they are ussually not accesible to the audinece.
